Steele Creek Soccer Club (SCSC) offers our Recreation Program for 6 to 19-year-old boys and girls. Recreation Soccer is the program designed for the beginning or developing player who wants to play in a relaxed atmosphere, strictly for FUN, while sharpening individual skills and learning more about the game of soccer.
Newcomers to soccer are welcome at any age.
Younger age groups play fun games while learning about soccer.
Parent involvement is highly recommended.
Recreation teams can play other SCSC teams.
The game is the greatest teacher. In Recreation, we build upon the rules set in Little Kickers so that the game remains age-appropriate, but a challenge, and FUN. The game is also a great social activity in that the player learns to work together with their team for a common goal. Playing sports is an integral part of a child’s physical, social, and mental development. Players make new friends, they burn off excess energy and soccer teaches the player to think on their feet, literally.
Objectives of Recreation
Fun! It is critical that players involved in youth soccer enjoy the game in which they are playing. If the organization is able to instill a passion and enjoyment in the game then half the battle is already won. This also relates very closely to how players perceive their coach(es) and their interaction with them. One of the main reasons players under 12 decide not to continue is that they no longer are enjoying the game; it has become work.
Development: A necessary element to support fun. Without it, training and games get stale because there is no improvement.
Life skills: In our case through the sport of soccer.
Season Breakdown
Recreation is a program for boys and girls ages 6 to 19 which runs for 9 to 11 weeks. During the season, two or three practice sessions will be led by our Technical Director, Jason Hall, and possibly even some of our competitive players. There will be game days held within the club, and scrimmages and games against other teams in the surrounding area. Practices are where our experienced coaches, with the assistance of parent managers, will lead the training session for the first half-hour and then the players will break out into small teams to play quick games soccer for the second half-hour. The program is strictly developmental, with an emphasis on learning and fun rather than on winning or scores.
When & Where?!
Practices & Games
Practices
For our kids in the Recreation program, they will have at least two practices a week. These practices will range from 1 to 1.5 hours depending on the age group. Due to limited field space and time changes, we do our best to ensure that practices end no later than 7:30 PM.
Practices per team have been pre-designed by our coaching staff to make sure the focus is always on growth over wins. We prefer to make sure the kids leave with a better understanding of the game, sportsmanship, and work ethic. Coaches have some freedom to tailor parts of the practices to the needs of the team, but overall there is a seasonal set of goals per age group.
Games
Times, days, and locations are dependent on the league each team is associated with. Due to surrounding leagues not supporting all age groups, teams may have weekday games and weekend games. As a default, there is a guarantee that the majority of games will take place on Saturday usually early morning into mid-afternoon. Areas games may reach are Fort Mill, York, Lake Wylie, Belmont, & South Charlotte.
Coaching & Teams
Coaches
Our Recreation Program is entirely volunteer-driven, and all commissioners and coaches volunteer their time to create the best possible experience for our players and families. At the same time, we also aim for our players to compete at the highest level. That is why we personally invest in the education of our coaches as well as the exposure of the different coaching styles for the players.
A key piece in being an effective player is being adaptable. We understand players may have a preference for positions, but our focus is that they understand the game, develop their skills and knowledge of the game, and ultimately be the most effective regardless of their position. This doesn't mean they won't specialize, but their familiarity with the variety of positions will be heightened.
Teams
Team rosters have been made and the season curriculum is being created. We encourage all the players to come to the workouts we have scheduled for the rest of the month, but we should have a game schedule relatively soon. All game information will be found both on the website and in the SportsSignup mobile app.
Do you have the keys to success?
Communication is Key
In terms of team communication, you will need to download the SportsSignup app from the App Store. This will allow us to communicate, rsvp to practices and games, and send quick updates. Please make sure that you use the email that you registered your child. The team should populate later this week.
Our Recreation Program is entirely volunteer-driven, and all commissioners and coaches volunteer their time to create the best possible experience for our players and families. New volunteers are always welcome! If interested, please let us know!
For older players that aren't at the competitive level but are looking to either continue their growth, prepare for the school season, or simply just have fun. Born 2010-2013
